TORONTO (June 13, 2022) – The union representing performers who make commercials unanimously endorsed a strategy to fight back against concerted union-busting by some advertising agencies. Its plan, backed by an initial $1 million from national reserves, will keep commercials made using union talent and take every legal step to stop employers from walking away from a collective agreement to make low-paid commercials, with no benefits or retirement contributions.

Through the National Commercial Agreement (NCA) 2022-2023 Solidarity and Action Plan, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) will identify further opportunities to grow membership in the commercial jurisdiction and increase opportunities for ACTRA performers.

“Our top priority is to ensure performing is a viable career for our members,” said Eleanor Noble, ACTRA National President. “The Action Plan sets out to do just that by increasing opportunities for more commercials to be made through the NCA.”

“For over 60 years, ACTRA has provided professional performers with fair pay, safe and respectful working conditions, and benefits through the NCA,” said Marie Kelly, ACTRA National Executive Director. “We understand the ongoing dispute has been difficult for many ACTRA members, and we are committed to continue supporting the needs of Canada’s talent.”
